I’m doing a Chloe Sullivan!

Yes, I joined my school’s journalism group for their online magazine!

And guess what? I get to do whatever I want; blogging or podcast. Blogging fer sho!

Much to my geekery, my first article if on American (Superhero) Comics! and my very hard attempt to try getting more people reading it. :)

Please feel free to point out at gramatical mistakes, or rephrase some sentences.
(it’s not published yet)

American Comics,
… not just for fat men with orange-stained Cheetos fingers.

Let’s face it, most of you will stereotype American comic book readers as either obese or skinny guys, who live in their mother’s basement and are 40 year old virgins. But after the recent flood of movie adaptations of comic books, the younger generations are now more familiar with superheroes such as; Ironman, Hulk, Batman, Hellboy etc.

What about those heroes still stuck in monthly issues?

Most non-comic book readers are still unfamiliar with characters that are considered as major characters by readers, such as Nightwing. Don’t know Nightwing? He’s Dick Grayson. Still doesn’t ring a bell? He’s the first of Batman’s protégés! Right now, Batman’s up to Robin number three.

What got me interested in comic books, namely DC Comics, was the in-depth character history. American comics are more like soap operas, and don’t have a concrete storyline, so it has all the time in the world for characterization.

Let’s use Dick Grayson as an example. People who have read Detective Comics since the 1940s would know him since he was Robin: wearing green-scaled underwear and fighting crime with Batman while shouting “Goly Gee Batman!” But since then he has “grown-up”, picked up a new superhero identity, found his own city to protect, and now leads a team. He also has his own monthly issue series!

If you’re a manga (Japanese comic book) reader, you know what I mean when stories just drag on and never reaches the conclusion! Annoying innit? This never happens in American comic books, because of the reason I mentioned above: it’s like The Bold and the Beautiful, without the whole load of drama, abortion and your husband coming back alive three years later after what you thought was a fatal snake bite while he was on an expedition in Africa. Furthermore, I bet you’ve wished for a crossover between two different manga titles, just for the sake of wanting to seem them team-up. Well, this happens quite often in American comic books! There are many crossovers within the institutions, as well as out of the institution, for example Justice Society of America (JSA) and DC vs. Marvel.

*****

Maybe superheroes comics aren’t your cup of tea, but don’t let that stop you from reading them.

You like chick-flicks? Try the new series called Spiderman Loves Mary Jane, which is basically about MJ and her high school life. Juggling around school, friends and her relationship with Spidey.

Dear female readers… find yourself your favourite hot superhero, and I guarantee you that you’ll enjoy reading comic book a lot more!

If you’re looking for a superhero comic not as dramatic as Superman, try Runaways. It’s about six teenagers (who thought they had a pretty average life), finding out their parents are super villains, and runs away from home. During their adventure each individual either finds out about their hidden powers, what they really are, or obtain these awesome power gloves that can blast fire. But since they are teenagers, there’re tons of dramas! I’m sure manga readers will love this series, since the art-style is greatly influenced by manga.

And no, they don’t have eyes half the size of their heads.

How about something waaay more realistic? Then checkout Marvel’s recent title called Kick-Ass. It’s rated mature for violence, but I’m sure Year 11+ can handle it. It’s basically about a high school comic-geek becoming a vigilante. But it’s not your average success story. He gets severely beaten up by gangs and gets into a whole load of trouble.

Want something with more flare and Tarantino-esque? Grab a copy of Young Liars! It’s institution is Vertigo (which goes under DC Comics’ umbrella) because of it’s rating. So much like Tarantino’s movie, I can only recommended it to mature readers or Upper school students. But it’s an amazing read, and I can go as far as saying it’s one of the best series I’ve read.

*****

I’m sure you’re wondering where you can purchase these comics. If you’re looking for trade paperbacks (TPB), which are basically 6/7 issues put together, you should be able to find/order it at any bookstore. But beware, major cooperates are out to rape your wallets! They will most likely charge $20 more than the original price.

This is when the dingy little comic book stores’ awesomeness comes in!They don’t charge any additional price, and you can order TPBs too. But the fallback is that the stores are really hard to find, and super tiny. So far I’ve only found two stores, which happens to be in the same building…

Sugar Street is right behind Windsor House, the building with Toys R Us.

Oh fuck me, I love it!

Posted in All Blogs, Comics, Marvel, Runaways with tags , , , on August 15, 2008 by Mao

Goly Gee Batman, Mao loves the Runaways!

I actually only finished the first run (#1-#18), but that picture’s cool. So whatever :]

So Yesterday TPBs/digest I ordered has arrived!
– Runaways vol. 1 – 3
– Teen Titans/Outsiders: Insiders
– The Flash: The Secret of Barry Allen.

It takes motherfucking TWO WEEKS, so I was overjoyed when I went to pick it up! I ordered Runaways because people guaranteed me of it’s awesomeness.

AND OMG, IT’S REALLY ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD!

man, I’m still really hyped from the ending, so my vocab range is really small.
But to some up this post, Runaways was…

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!

You just feel for the kids you know? Like you really think to yourself “wow, sucks to be them”. You just get so attached to the characters, so the ending made me go “….wtf! :'(“.

But I being a sixteen year, same age as most of them, found it weird that none of them cried. Sure, they were angry/panicked/all that jazz, but none of them were CRYING!Maybe I’m a wussy pancake, but I’d cry and be like “OMG, WHAT AM I GOING TO DO! I WANNA DIE, I WANNA DIE!!!” and I’ll be whiney… to the max.

and now I need to go order the rest of the digest. So it’ll be another 3 weeks until I can read the rest, oh fuck me living in Hong Kong.

Well that’s it from me! Something short and sweet once in a while :)

This way to Nightwing Goodness

The day started ugly.

And I know that none of you will give a damn.

I had a big pimple between my eyes. I squeezed it. It started to bleed. It hurt.
Something was wrong with my mascara brush. I couldn’t find my black eyeshadow. I applied my blush un-evenly.

I still know you don’t give a damn.

I couldn’t choose which bottom to wear. Jeans or mini-skirt? I went with the mini.
Which bag to take with me, a handbag or a rabbit rucksack? I went with the handbag.
I couldn’t remember where I placed my hairbrush, my mirror, gums?, my chap-stick and my wallet.

I bet you’re waiting for my Nightwing goodness.

I left home. And I went back to change my bag and shoes. I swapped my bag for the rabbit rucksack. I swapped my shoes for a big-toed ankle covering sneakers, it made my feet look big. Wow, that’s a mouthful.
But big feet’s cool. That means you can take up more place of the street… which is cool, i guess.

I decided to turn myself into Wolverine.

SO!
I order 5 TPB today, yay!
I ordered the the first three volume of Runaways (digest version coz im cheap). The MUCH anticipated Runaways! Fuck, I’m so excited already!
I just have to wait for 2 weeks… grrr.
I also ordered The Flash: Secret of Barry Allen, for good ol’ Flash goodness! and Outsiders/Teen Titans: Insiders, which I was skeptical about purchasing *shifty eyes*, but i did…

So, where’s the Nightwing goodness you’re looking for?
Lets starts it now,

I was seriously planning on waiting for the Titans TPB, because I didn’t want to purchase the monthly issue. Mostly because of the pressure of ‘having to buy it every month’ . Yes, I could get a Pull-list, but my income’s unstable, meaning that i strictly rely on monthly pocket money which I tend to plurge impulsivly. So when I grow up, my dream is to have a Pull-list!

MOVING ON!
I couldn’t WAIT any longer! I bought issue #1! Now I have to go look for #2-#4, great. It exceeded my expectation.

IT WAS AMAZING! NO KIDDING!

I have new found respect for Judd Winick. Nightwing was not a Virgin Mary toast! He was actually really cool and awesome, and it wasn’t because of his looks!

And did I mention the art?
After I post this I’m gonna go find out who did it! I think I found my favourite artist!

If you don’t know what Titans is, all former member of the Teen Titans (Dick, Wally, Roy etc.’s generation) gets back together. And does whatever superheroes do.

Heeey, where’s Roy’s hand?
(clockwise: Nightwing, Beast Boy, Raven, Starfire, Donna Troy, Cyborg, Flash)
hmmmm~

But OMG, this conversation between Roy (Red Arrow) and his daughter, Lian, is too cute!
eeeep! x]

Who would’ve thought! Mr. Skootch was the one responsible of putting waffles into the DVD player!
ahaha!

and naked Starfire tempting Animalman’s son… or not.

and where would I be without the Wally goodness.
I swear this issue has tons of nudity.

Guess who interrupted this amazingly interesting talk about mixing carbs and mayo? (No sarcasm intended)
The evil red goo. Curses!

and oh my…
Ho Ho Ho, I swear this issue was made for me!

*pssst* Wally! I don’t like putting carbs and mayo together either, i think that’s a decent excuse to get married. :)~

Dude, it really made me wonder why I didn’t bother buying the Titans when it first came out!
I really like Flash (Wally), Red Arrow and Nightwing. And they all happened to be in the Titans!
Schoopid schoopid Mao!

***

While I was at the comic book store, I also purchased The Brave and the Bold: Nightwing and Hawkman (plus Deadman).
I know I’m a week late, but… I don’t care!

They were great!
Nightwing was superb! Worth a million bucks!

Today started shitty, but I ran into TWO Nightwing goodness in one day!
WOHOO!

*

Then, they made him look like a douchebag…
No, the enemy didn’t push him off the side. He ran… jumped and hoped to make it to the other side… but sadly, didn’t…

Psssh! Nightwing, a douche?!
He ain’t, brotha!

So the story in a nutshell is… Nightwing lies to the Justice League, JSA, Outsiders and Teen Titans, so Hawkman, Deadman and himself can fight a big ugly dragon who has Green Arrow captive.
It sounds lame, but it’s actually real cool :)

Mmm~, douchebags~

Why DC can Grill Steak Marvel’s ass

Posted in All Blogs, Cartoon, Comics, DC Comic, Gambit and Rogue, Legion of Superheroes, Marvel, Movies, Runaways, The Flash with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 30, 2008 by Mao

Welcome to my new blog entry, in which I show my extreme biased opinion towards the never ending battle between DC Comics and Marvel :) … and I am clearly a DC supporter. *waves DC flag*

I’ll keep this blog short and sweet, while I make my Mac ‘n Cheese.

My pasta’s spiral :)

So why DC can stir-fry Marvel?
DC Comics clearly have a much better movie lineup coming up, compared to Marvel! and The Dark Knight clearly out-did Spiderman 3.

DC’s lineup…

The Spirit (2008)

Watchmen (2009)

Wonder Woman (2009) – animated, straight to DVD

Superman: Man of Steel (2009)

Teen Titans: The Judas Contract (rawr!) – animated, straight to DVD

Jonah Hex (2010)

The Flash (2010)

Justice League: Mortal (2011)

Y: The Last Man (idk?)

Most of them are still in the pre-production stage. So hopefully, all of them makes it to the big screens/DVD *crosses finger*

Watchmen is the next on the lineup (after the Frank Miller-fied Spirit). and I just watched the latest film trailer. Is it awesome, or is it AWESOME? It looks plain amazing and epic! Nothing like The Fantastic Four or Hulk! In the past few years/months, we were bombarded with average Marvel movies. Now it’s DC’s turn to hit the silver screens with waaay brill movies.

… and are they seriously making another Superman movie?
No offense to the big man, but he’s kinda… boring. And his only real enemy are Kryptonites… OMG, unless they’re planning on using Dark Seid as the villain! :O Then that would be so cool!

Ok, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. I can’t express how frustrated I am with this. I heard about the pre-production of this movie more than a year ago. Few months ago, I checked back to how it was doing. Then they decided to put it ‘on hold’ because they aren’t sure if there are enough fans to support it.
*grumble grumble*
This straight to DVD film was scheduled to be released before Wonder Woman, but now it’s pushed back. Plus, Kid Flash and Jericho aren’t even gonna be in it … WHYYYY, KID FLAAAAAAASH, WHHHHHY?!?!?!!! I still do have high hopes for this DVD, since it does have an amazing storyline.
If anyone from DC Comics is reading this, I will bloody purchase the DVD! Release it now! … please? :)

Fuck, pasta!
… over cooked my pasta! Now it’s all soft and squiggy. :( Oh well, at least it’s still edible.

Jonah Hex. Are you shitting me?
Unless someone on IMDB is joking around, why are they making this film. I don’t think his fan-base is big enough. *shrugs*

The Flash!!!
FYb kjd ngbl kndykb;mu, need I say more? :DDDDDDDDDDDD
Fuckin’ hell! They better release it by 2010, and not push it back! I vote for Ryan Reynolds as The Flash, Wally West, the man!
nyahahhahaha!

Justice League: Mortal sounds bloody brilliant! I’ll deffinatley need another blog post for this, but this thing is gonna be huge! I’m telling ya now! But Adam Brody as The Flash (rumoured), oh pah-lease! If it really is him, I’m gonna hate the fangirls that’s gonna come along with him. And ima be crossing my fingers in hopes of Flash being Wally… and not Barry.

***

Ok, now lets checkout Marvel’s upcoming movies.

Marvel’s lineup…

Wolverine

Punisher 2 – War Zone

Ant-Man

Captain America

Nick Fury (what, again? Remake or wrong info?)

Thor

The Avengers

Runaways

I can’t be butt fucked to find the dates.

Wolverine is getting his own spin-off, and rumor says that Gambit‘s gonna be in it! … and that’s about the only pros I can think of.

Punisher‘s pretty cool, so props to him :)

Ant-Man and Thor, Laughing My Fucking Ass OFF!!!
AHHAHAHHAHA< LOLOOLOLOLOL. LMFAAOOOAOAOAOOO.
’nuff said.

LOL!

What does Ant-Man look like? An ant! Why is it okay for Batman to dress like a bat, and not for Ant-man? Because bats are cooler than ants! and what can Ant-Man to dress like an ant? hmmm… Oh yeah! Shrink into a size of an ant! How useful can that power be?!

… touche

and Please don’t tell me you weren’t expecting The Avengers as soon as you saw Ironman’s film poster.

Runaways… I think it’s gonna be farking amazaing :) Cast me me me!!! I wanna be Nico!

Now, compare Marvels’ lineup with DCs’…
Marvel, you just got served!

***

I just found out that Legion of Superheroes are gonna come out in Smallville. I don’t know why, but I don’t think Legion of Superheores are cool. I think they’re… un-cool? >.< I didn’t enjoy the cartoon version either. Season 2 was better than the first, thanks to the heroes ‘growing up’, and making it bearable to watch. It was a pleasure to watch the Lightening Dude (Live wire?) and Superman-X.
We’ll see how the Legion does in Smallville.

***

Ugh, so much for keeping it short and sweet.

And I just noticed that it’s been approximately a week since I made my WordPress account.
So yay! :)

My Favourite Comics, Part 2!

Posted in All Blogs, Cartoon, Comics, DC Comic, Favourites, Nightwing, Outsiders, Teen Titans, Young Justice with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 27, 2008 by Mao

As mentioned in Part 1, I mostly enjoy reading Team Superhero Comics!
Just the idea of each indivisual with different superpower coming together and working together, is.just.plain.AWESOME! I do enjoy wrestling, especially tag-teams. It’s like… with a help of another person, they can do something completely new and extreme with their powers.

Gotta love ’em WonderPets!

So, my favourite teams…

Young Justice

Teenage Superheroes! Tons of bickering, hormones and humor! Good read if you’re up for laughs. They were the first Super-team TPB I bought (JLA: World WIthout Grownups), in which 3 completely different teenagers (Robin, Superboy and Impulse) comes together.

Robin (Tim) … being Batman’s protege, is the mature and level-headed of the bunch, and naturally becomes the leader.
Superboy (“Conner”) … thinks with his manhood, arrogant and a bit cocky. But he does mature by the time he’s a part of the Teen Titans.
Impulse (Bart) … boy oh boy. His name is self-explanatory: impulsive! Immature AND reckless. But he keeps the series humorous. :) He is a good kid!

*remembers great Impulse scenes from JLA: WWG*
*quickly scans*

Impulse owning young Joker
… and
… and

Nazi Dinosaurs from Venus. Greaaat~…

Although all 3 of thier personalities gratly differs, they come together and kicks some evil hiney! And their dynamics is what makes the short-lived series brilliant :)
Ofcourse, later on in the series they are joined by other super-teens…. Secret, Wondergirl, Arrowette, Empress and Slobo (who’s a kid version of Lobo xD).

Teen Titans –I bet you didn’t see the coming! *sarcasm*
So it’s basically 4 members from Young Justice, joining the 4 old members of the Teen Titans. And Impulse becomes Kid Flash during this series! Awesome costume change too <3 He becomes more intelligent after he reads the whole San Fransico library in under 20 minutes, and matures a lot. BUT! He’s still the most nicest guy in the team, sweet boy :)

Brownie point for you Bart!

Superboy, Kon-El, Connor Kent, starts Smallville High School and also gets a costume change.
He goes from wearing a sexified Superman costume + leather jacket + ear-ring…

To wearing a… well… plain black shirt with Supe’s logo

… his hair reminds me of Forest Gump

Wait, lemme grow some more hair on him…
It’s the small change that counts!

Ugh.
But I guess Superboy looks more like a “civilian” now (I hope that’s the image he was going for), and maybe a bit retarted.
Still love ya Connor!

Hah, look at what I just found!

Creepy… indeed…
… and something’s very wrong with Starfire’s head… Ohright , it’s just bent 45º to her left.
Why couldn’t Cartoon Network/Kids WB just get some people to cosplay as them? and instead used cheap China labour to manufacture the Teen Titans suit? I guess we’ll never know.

Oh, and speaking of Starfire. SLUTTY!
Her suit barely covers her titties nor ass. Wait, it doesn’t even cover her ass, but only her butt-crack.
Gotta admit, neat picture…

De-railing here!
Gotta focus on how awesome Teen Titans are.

I just think I love them Teen Titans (Gotta buy the Titans TPB when it’s out! Wally, Dick and Troia in the same series again!)… AHHH, see what I keep doing here? I just keep getting distracted by stupid pop-ups in my head!

I just think I love them Teen Titans because I love(ed) Young Justice! Eventhough I didn’t growup reading weekly issues of Young Justice nor Teen Titans, I did come across Young Justice first. And I really grew into them. And few years later I decided to give Teen Titans a shot. It took me a while to pick the title up because of the image the cartoon version embedded in my head.
No offense… I do enjoy watching the cartoon series. But I wouldn’t pay to read the comic series (except for the issue in which Kid Flash races against Mas y Menos).
If you enjoy Teen Titans, checkout Tiny Titans!

(Superboy has to take care of Krypto, the Superdog.)

mhm, so…

Go Titans!

and finally…

Outsiders –

Unlike most super-teams, the team isn’t family based and more “work” based. This was so that they wouldn’t be emotionally involved with each other.
I think that’s pretty cool :D
They get paid to serve Justice!

I basically purchsed The Outsiders, for the sake of seeing Nightwing in-action and working in a team. But I didn’t get what I was expecting.
This is usually the part in which I tell you about how much more Nightwing proved to be and how awesome he is.
But I’m not gonna.
Because Nightwing was basically like a piece of toast.

He’s edgy, nicely toned, but just plain boring!

Maybe he’d be a Virgin Mary Toast. He’s nice to look at…

… He’s also a great leader (given the fact that his team could sometimes be full of naggy folks).

So I guess that would make him a great leader toast.

and watch ’em go COMMANDO!

.

.

.

But I got a plesant suprise from the other Outsider members! Grace (red haired girl) is a juggernaut! She’s unbelivably bitchy, but she’s hilarious and an awesome character! Another character which I didn’t expect to like was Shift, the clone of Metamorpho. He’s a “nice guy” and has this Ooomph-gene in him which just made me like him!

… And this is one of the coolest tag-team scenes I’ve ever seen!
Grace and Thunder! Grace has metahuman strength, and Thunder can change her body density.
They catch a jet, an effing jet! Thunder gets as dense as she can, and hangs onto Grace as she catches the jet (Grace is also able to heal really fast).

My awesome scanning skill hacked off the side…
Grace: “Good, we’re right on target”
Thunder: “This is so stupid! We’re just gonna die, Grace! Look at the size of the plane! It’ll just roadkill us all the way to the upper West side!”
Grace: “Shut up, just shut up your prissy sorority-girl cake hole, okay?!”
… and the rest, you can read for yourself :)

Outsiders is full of swear words, semi-nudity, extremeness… and i love it! It’s great to know that superheroes have sex life yanno?
How I know they do?
Well checkit!

In vol. 2 , they go at it again.
And the Peqod is the name of their jet.

The sad thing about this series is that the 1st and the 2nd volume of the TPB is great! But from there it slowly goes downhill. I haven’t collected all TPB of the Outsiders, I’m just not sure if it’s worth getting them anymore.

Maybe Nightwing, … maybe…

Runaways will probably make it onto this list in a few weeks time, when I can actually get my hands on them! I gotta wait till my next pocket-money day, and it takes up to 2 weeks for the orders to arrive! ARGH! I’m sure it’s gonna be a great read, unless all reviews that I’ve read were full of bullshit.
I’ll see how it goes.

Feeling Adventurous and going Marvel

Posted in All Blogs, Cloak and Dagger, Comics, Marvel, Runaways with tags , , , , , , , on July 25, 2008 by Mao

I’m techincally a DC Comics person. Therefore makes me biased. And therefore I usually automatically assume that DC Comics is better than Marvel (like, way).
I’m probably just really jelous of their quick methods of attracting more audiences, making blockbuster hits, while DC Comics stuck to straight-to-DVD animated movies.

What actually made me AVOIDE Marvel was what my bestfriend said…

– At the cinemas about the watch Spiderman 3 –

BFF – “I like the Marvel movies”
Me – “Oh, I prefer DC Comics”
BFF – “What’s DC?”

JESUS MOTHERFUCKING CHRIST! PEOPLE KNEW MARVEL BUT NOT DC COMICS! … was my initial thought. But now The Dark Knight‘s turnover’s higher than Spiderman 3, so hah!, DC Comics conquer!!!

Anyway, what I’m trying to say here is that I came across an potentially amazing Marvel comic, called Runaways.

Amazing artwork!

Hot boys!

Farout Amazon reviews!

ok, so it’s probabaly going to be an amazing read. Not saying Marvel’s amazing. But everything about it sounds/looks FANTASTIC!

Chase looks so effing HOT! My God! *drools*
Stupid, stupid Mao! Stay on topic. STAY ON TOPIC!

I would go to the comic book store to order it tomorrow, but i just went there today. And already placed an order for Teen Titans: The future is now, and i’m running low on cash. So gonna wait till August till i have Ka-ching! back in my pocket. Yes, I am a whiney teenager who feeds off her mom’s money.

It seems worth my money if i get the hardcover. But I can cover more story-grounds if I buy the softcover version, since i can buy 4 softcovers for a price of 1 hardcover.
Ugh, i hate being restrcited with money.

I was reading wikipedia entry on the Runaways, and I came across the name Cloak and Dagger. CLOAK AND MOTHERFUCKING DAGGER! I practically hulked out in front of the computer. Because, oh my GOD, they came out in this years Media Studies GCSE paper. I assumed that they were VILLIANS! AND I BLOODY WROTE “THEY ARE EVIL!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE buttsucking VILLIANS!!!!” (or something along those lines) in my papers. RAWR! UGHHH. and I’m getting my GCSE results within a month!

Goodbye A*, Goodbye A :'(

Come on, don’t they look evil at first glance?

No?

No?

… fine.

But I swear. If they provided a DC Comic’s character instead of Marvel’s, I know I could’ve wrote something… something better.

Hah, now i look at it they kind of remind me of more cloaked Spectre and more modest Power Girl!

<— Add more mysteriousness,
and shade him in more
darker

Boob-reduction, grow hair,
cover leg, take away the
cape —————>

Ugh, Powergirl…
PEEK-A-BOOB much?

hah, and there’s a cyborg called Victor in the Runaways? Psssh, ripoff from DC’s Cyborg. I just wish DC Comics could’ve came up with the Runaways. Did I mention Ironman’s stupid?

ahaha, llolicopter! night.
